HOW TO HELP PEOPLE SUFFERING
FROM RECENT NATURAL DISASTERS
There seem to have been so many natural and human-made disasters of late that it is hard to count them all: the tsunami in Japan, the tornado damage in the mid-west and even locally in Springfield, the flooding along the Mississippi river and most recently in Minot, N.D., to name a few. How do you respond out of compassion and faithful solidarity when there is only so much one person can do? The answer is to support those institutions and organizations who specialize in disaster relief and who have the lowest overhead costs as a percentage of their budget, in other words who deliver the most "bang" for your "buck." Among these organizations, one stands above most: the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Disaster Response.

Among the many relief agencies to respond to the disasters that grab the headlines one day and are quickly forgotten, the ELCA Disaster Response is committed to staying the course for the long run. As they say on their website, "We help to bring God's comfort, healing and renewal to those affected by disasters. And when the dust settles and the headlines change, we stay to provide ongoing assistance to those in need."

If you feel called to respond with a financial donation through the ELCA, please click here. Your contributions, combined with others, allow the ELCA Disaster Response to remain consistent in its mission, for as long as it takes to put lives and communities back together again. This is God's love in action, through your hands and your decisions.
